Day 1 – 4 | Maasai Mara : Area Overview

The Mara (as it is affectionately known) covers 1510 km2 (583 mi2) and is widely considered to be Africa’s greatest reserve. The backdrop of the Siria escarpment in the west overlooks sweeping savannas, riverine woodlands, and forests on a deceptively flat landscape that extends eastwards towards the Sekenani Hills and northwards towards the Aitong Hills. The Mara is in essence the northern extension of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem and plays host to one of nature’s greatest phenomenons, the Great Wildebeest Migration. Because of the quality of wildlife viewing, the Mara has for generations been the setting for hundreds of wildlife documentaries, including Disney’s African Cats, and the BBC’s Big Cat Diaries and Planet Earth. It is a wildlife photographer’s paradise and every year visitors come to capture the spectacular wildlife. The reserve and its conservancies contain some of the highest densities of predators in Africa and this only increases as nomads and vagrants follow the huge herds back and forth through this ecosystem during the seasonal wildebeest migration.

Day 1 – 4 | Il Moran Camp: Property Overview

Nestled on the banks of the Mara River, Il Moran Camp features that extra bit of luxury. The property is small and intimate, with added touches that place this camp at the top of the safari accommodations. Il Moran is small and peaceful – the ideal camp for honeymooners and couples looking for a very special safari experience or for families with older children. Hidden under ancient trees deep in the forest, are just ten tents which line the winding banks of the Mara River. Dark chunky wooden tables contrast with oversized blue couches and a central, colourfully beaded chandelier, while tribal portraits and African artefacts are dotted around.

Experience & Activities

Il Moran is in the heart of the best game viewing area of the Masai Mara National Park. Having operated in the Masai Mara for 40 years, the camp’s driver-guides have an unparalleled knowledge of the reserve combined with a deep understanding and respect for the importance of this wilderness area. Guests enjoy two drives per day in the famous Masai Mara Game Reserve and surrounding areas and can take advantage of hot air balloon safaris, walking safaris, and cultural excursions.

Meals are served on the raised wooden decking of the main mess and dining tent which offers a bird’s eye view of the snorting hippos below. The sunken fire pit which is lit in the evenings is the perfect spot to sit back with a cocktail of your choice after enjoying a range of spa treatments in the privacy of your own room.

Accommodations

Governors’ Il Moran Camp features ten luxurious tents furnished with king beds on frames fashioned from ancient, fallen olive trees. Each canvas room is expansive and newly furnished to a superior standard. Beautiful old wood furniture and muted natural tones are a natural extension of the environment around. Each tent boasts a stylish bathroom with a Victorian style bath, his & her vanities, flush toilets, showers, and hot and cold water. A large verandah is designed for relaxing in comfort in the peaceful surroundings.
