Botswana
This is one of Africa’s most popular and exclusive safari destinations. The country’s tourism destinations are made of three main areas; the wet and wild regions of northern Botswana along the Chobe River and Okavango Delta, the vast Central Kalahari and Makgadikgadi Pans, and the southern Kagalagadi Trans frontier Park that spills over into South Africa. It is also home to some of the most luxurious lodges in Africa. So, whether your taste is for premier accommodation and fine dining, or the achievement of facing the wild frontier up close – Botswana has it. Kagalagadi Trans Frontier Park also known as the ‘peace park’, an amalgamation of Botswana’s Mabuasehube and Kalahari reserves, and South Africa’s Gemsbok National Park, was the first of its kind in Africa to straddle an international border and be jointly managed by two countries.
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is a vast heartland of the Kalahari that is waterless and featureless, yet fascinating in its immensity. On the northern side, we have the famous Deception Valley and Piper’s Pans. Makgadikgadi Pans are home to vast herds of wildebeest and zebra, with attendant lions.
Okavango Delta is the jewel in Botswana’s crown. It is a vast wetland that flexes between 6,000 and 15,000 square kilometers as annual floods come and go. The delta marks the point where the Okavango River spreads out onto the 1000m-thick Kalahari sands and soaks away to nothing. Consisting of floodplains, lagoons and a maze of islands, it’s largely uninhabited and home to copious wildlife and birdlife. Some of the most possible activities are game drives walks, and rides in a mokoro (a traditional dugout canoe). The Okavango is good to visit at any time of the year. On the edge of the Okavango Delta, lies the Moremi Game Reserve which has diverse ecosystems ranging from grassland and woodland to waterside. It’s probably Botswana’s most-visited game reserve.
Chobe National Park sits along the Chobe River and is famous for huge herds of elephants and birdlife. It is possible to do game and boat drives, and the Victoria Falls is less than 100km away.
